Just
what is an Air Action Zone?
The Sheffield
Clean Air Partnership team explains
An Air Action Zone or Air Quality Management Area is an area
that has been defined where one or more of the UK Governments'
Air Quality Objectives will not be met. For the Sheffield Clean
Air Partnership area the only pollutant (out of the seven specified
by the Government as being of importance in terms of ill health
effects) that is unlikely to exceed its objective is nitrogen
dioxide.
Within 12-18 months of legally declaring the AAZ, an Action Plan must be submitted
to the UK Government, specifically the Department of Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs (DEFRA) stating how air pollution levels will be lowered so that the
objectives are met.
